Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

EMDR is a form of treatment that was developed to deal with symptoms resulting from traumatic and unresolved life experiences.  The process, developed by Dr. Francine Shapiro, uses an eight-phase approach to address the disturbing aspects of traumatic memories.   It has proved very effective in helping war veterans and victims of violent crime to overcome the psychological and physical disturbances they experience and it is equally effective with less traumatic memories as well.

EMDR does not blank out the upsetting memories; it enables the client to view them from a new perspective and overcome the emotions and physical responses the memories previously created.
